Chapters 9 and 10
When I woke up in the morning it had finally stopped snowing. On the way home we made a plan that if there were any cow-boys father would run back as fast as he could and we would find a place to hide. We stop to eat about two miles from Ridgebury. When we got there people made faces as we traveled. After traveling for awhile I realized I hadn't seen Father for awhile, I tried to remember the last time I saw Father. After about a mile or two I found multiple horse tracks and I knew exactly what had happened. But I keep thinking about where Father and the Cow-Boys were. I went back to the wagon and started down the road, constantly checking the tracks to see if they were pulling off to the side of the road. Finally I saw the cow-boys on horseback about twenty yards ahead. So I tricked them into thinking the escort was coming.
It felt empty in the tavern without Father. Mother didn't cry except when I first told her. She kept telling herself that he was being held captive, but then she changed her story to he was on a prison ship and that he would come back as soon as the war was over.

Chapters 7 and 8
The summer of 1776 came and went while I tried to keep away from Mr.Heron. The war continued on and it didn't seem to effect us most of the time. Twice we got letters from Sam, the first one was about the fighting in New York, the Rebels lost. The second letter didn't explain so much, although he wrote about how they were encamped some where in New Jersey. Mom and Dad got in a fight over if they should reply to his messages or not, mom lost the first time but lost the second time.
I visited my North Salem cousins and realized how crowded it was on the farm. I felt shy around them. We ate at their house and went to bed. In the morning we got the oxen ready and left. The next night we spent at one of dad's friend's house.

Chapters 5 and 6
Yesterday I talked about how the Continental Army and the Tories are stealing the town's animals and it's creating food shortages. I also talked about how the prices of everything kept going up the due to war and, I talked about how I miss Sam.I talked about how I also envied him for being so brave and courageous. Dad ranted about how the Rebels are foolish for opposing the British and how could they possibly beat an Army of such size.
Today my biggest problem was getting to see Mr.Heron, because if dad saw me talking to Mr.Heron he would be suspicious and if he knew I started the conversation he would know what we were talking about instantly.

Chapters 3 and 4
Yesterday I thought about how war is much more
different than how I imagined. I also talked about how I thinks having
a tavern owner for a dad is much better than a farming dad. I talked about what I do when I can. Then one day my friend Betsy tells me my brother Sam will be back soon but she doesn't know when.
Today I went to the tavern to find my dad getting asked where his gun was while they pointed a sword at his stomach, My dad kept saying that Sam took it but the Rebels didn't believe him and kept asking. Once my father calmed down and stopped yelling did they believe him. I decided to get the family gun from Sam at Warrup’s barn. when I got there I tried multiple times to get the gun from the heavily sleeping Sam. When I finally pried the gun from Sam, I started to run home as fast as he could. About half way home I realized that Sam was chasing me.I knew Sam would catch me soon but kept running. When Sam did catch up, I threatened to shoot him but, Sam distracted me long enough to get the gun back. Sam and I then talked for a minute and started to go home even though the Rebels can’t see Sam because he could get hanged for deserting his group. When Sam and I get home Sam sees that his father is home and turns and runs.

Let me introduce myself.
Hello!
My name is Tim Meeker. I am a few years younger than my brother Sam. My
father’s name is Eliphalet Meeker (also called Life) and my mother’s name is
Susannah. I live in Redding. My parents run a tavern in town. My daily chores
are to take care of the animals and keeping the tavern clean and running.
My brother Sam went to college
and came back with talk of war. He is also talking about how he raided fought
the British with the minutemen at Lexington and Concord. Sam has been making my
father mad because he keeps talking about how a war is brewing and he is going
to join the Continental Army and our dad believes in listening to Britain and
paying the taxes. Tomorrow, I’m going to have to do my chores.
